Give us today our daily bread.

Matthew 6:11

The true bread

51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

John 6:51 CSB

Have you ever noticed the repetition of day and daily in that sentence? New Testament scholar Kenneth Bailey explains that the words are repeated because of the difficult-to-translate Greek word epiousios. As a matter of fact, there is no record of this word being used anywhere else in Greek literature. Biblical scholars have translated the word in a handful of ways over the years, but the oldest commentary we have on the subject—and the one most closely related to Aramaic, the language Jesus spoke—is the Old Syriac. That translation is: “Give us today the bread that doesn’t runout.” source: 1.Kenneth Bailey,Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes(Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity, 2008), 121.

Remember the truth regarding the need for bread:

8 Aware of this, Jesus said, “You of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves that you do not have bread? 9 Don’t you understand yet? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand and how many baskets you collected? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand and how many large baskets you collected?

Matthew 16:8-10 CSB

Our daily need: Bread of the Spirit

May I be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, may I let my requests be known to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard my heart and my mind in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6–7
