The prophecy of Micah opens with a declaration of coming judgment upon the northern kingdom of Israel (Samaria) and the southern kingdom of Judah (Jerusalem), and the cause of this judgment is listed as premeditated crime, covetousness, fraud, and lying prophets (1:1–2:11). Nevertheless, there is a word of hope in God’s promises of regathering and deliverance (2:12–13).
Micah next focuses his prophetic barbs on the ungodly rulers and false prophets of Israel and Judah and predicts a coming disaster upon them (3). This word of condemnation is followed by a consoling announcement of future restoration through the reinstitution of the kingdom under the rule of Messiah (4–5).
