The author of Ecclesiastes instructs about the role of chance in life:
"Again I saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, or the battle to the strong, or bread to the wise, or riches to the discerning, or favor to the skillful; rather, time and chance happen to all of them." Ecclesiastes 9:11 CSB
How does this fit in with God’s sovereignty over the affairs of men? An example sheds light on this question:
The Lord had foretold through his prophet, Micaiah son of Imlah, the death of Ahab in battle (1 Kings 22:13-23), but Ahab disguised himself so his enemies would not recognize him in battle. However, a chance action brought about the fulfillment of this prophecy:
"But a man drew his bow without taking special aim and struck the king of Israel through the joints of his armor. So he said to his charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle, for I am badly wounded!” 1 Kings 22:34 CSB
Here we have an example of a chance action by a man accomplishing the foretold will of God.
