The themes of kingship are especially dense in Psalm 95-99. The expressions are varied, but they revolve around ideas of sovereignty. When you observe a cluster of passages with the same themes, sometimes the best place to start to understand those themes is simply tracking them. The table above does just that.

God’s View of the Nations https://worldview.dhw6358.com/gods-view-of-the-nations/ https://worldview.dhw6358.com/gods-view-of-the-nations/#respond Wed, 19 Aug 2020 12:19:24 +0000 https://worldview.dhw6358.com/?p=1618

15 Look, the nations are like a drop in a bucket;

they are considered as a speck of dust on the scales;

he lifts up the islands like fine dust.

16 Lebanon’s cedars are not enough for fuel,

or its animals enough for a burnt offering.

17 All the nations are as nothing before him;

they are considered by him

as empty nothingness.

Isaiah 40:15-17

15 Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket;
they are regarded as dust on the scales;
he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.

17 Before him all the nations are as nothing;
they are regarded by him as worthless
and less than nothing.

Isaiah 40:15, 17 NIV

The Prophecy of Cyrus https://worldview.dhw6358.com/the-prophecy-of-cyrus/ https://worldview.dhw6358.com/the-prophecy-of-cyrus/#respond Mon, 10 Aug 2020 14:39:46 +0000 https://worldview.dhw6358.com/?p=1398

45:1 The Lord says this to Cyrus, his anointed,
whose right hand I have grasped
to subdue nations before him
and disarm[a] kings,
to open doors before him,
and even city gates will not be shut:
2 “I will go before you
and level the uneven places;[b]
I will shatter the bronze doors
and cut the iron bars in two.
3 I will give you the treasures of darkness
and riches from secret places,
so that you may know that I am the Lord.
I am the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.
4 I call you by your name,
for the sake of my servant Jacob
and Israel my chosen one.
I give a name to you,
though you do not know me.
5 I am the Lord, and there is no other;
there is no God but me.
I will strengthen[c] you,
though you do not know me,
6 so that all may know from the rising of the sun to its setting
that there is no one but me.
I am the Lord, and there is no other.
7 I form light and create darkness,
I make success and create disaster;
I am the Lord, who does all these things.

Fulfillment of one of Jerimah’s prophecies https://worldview.dhw6358.com/fulfillment-of-one-of-jerimahs-prophecies/ Tue, 04 Aug 2020 12:42:16 +0000 https://worldview.dhw6358.com/?p=1272

6 The chief priests took the silver and said, “It’s not permitted to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 They conferred together and bought the potter’s field with it as a burial place for foreigners. 8 Therefore that field has been called “Field of Blood” to this day. 9 Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: They took[b] the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him whose price was set by the Israelites, 10 and they gave[c] them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.[d]

Matthew 27:6-10

Jr 32:6–9; Zch 11:12–13

6 Jeremiah replied, “The word of the Lord came to me: 7 Watch! Hanamel, the son of your uncle Shallum, is coming to you to say, ‘Buy my field in Anathoth for yourself, for you own the right of redemption to buy it.’

8 “Then, as the Lord had said, my cousin Hanamel came to the guard’s courtyard and urged me, ‘Please buy my field in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for you own the right of inheritance and redemption. Buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord. 9 So I bought the field in Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel, and I weighed out the silver to him—seventeen shekels[a] of silver.

Jeremiah 32:6–9 CSB

12 Then I said to them, “If it seems right to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.” So they weighed my wages, thirty pieces of silver.

13 “Throw it to the potter,”[a] the Lord said to me—this magnificent price I was valued by them. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw it into the house of the Lord, to the potter.[b]

Example of chance accomplishing the fulfillment of a prophecy from God https://worldview.dhw6358.com/example-of-chance-being-used-by-god/ https://worldview.dhw6358.com/example-of-chance-being-used-by-god/#respond Tue, 30 Jun 2020 11:42:20 +0000 https://worldview.dhw6358.com/?p=204 The author of Ecclesiastes instructs about the role of chance in life:

"Again I saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, or the battle to the strong, or bread to the wise, or riches to the discerning, or favor to the skillful; rather, time and chance happen to all of them."
Ecclesiastes 9:11 CSB

How does this fit in with God’s sovereignty over the affairs of men? An example sheds light on this question:

The Lord had foretold through his prophet, Micaiah son of Imlah, the death of Ahab in battle (1 Kings 22:13-23), but Ahab disguised himself so his enemies would not recognize him in battle. However, a chance action brought about the fulfillment of this prophecy:

"But a man drew his bow without taking special aim and struck the king of Israel through the joints of his armor. So he said to his charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle, for I am badly wounded!”
1 Kings 22:34 CSB

Here we have an example of a chance action by a man accomplishing the foretold will of God.
