Government

The Source of Governmental Authority

Government was established by God for specific purposes

13 Let everyone submit to the governing authorities, since there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by GodSo then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God’s command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you want to be unafraid of the one in authority? Do what is good, and you will have its approval. For it is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, because it does not carry the sword for no reason. For it is God’s servant, an avenger that brings wrath on the one who does wrong. Therefore, you must submit, not only because of wrath but also because of your conscience. And for this reason you pay taxes, since the authorities are God’s servants, continually attending to these tasks.[a] Pay your obligations to everyone: taxes to those you owe taxes, tolls to those you owe tolls, respect to those you owe respect, and honor to those you owe honor.

Romans 13:1-7 CSB

God gives the authority to rule

‘The fear and terror of you will be in every living creature on the earth, every bird of the sky, every creature that crawls on the ground, and all the fish of the sea. They are placed under your authority.

Genesis 9:2 CSB

…he removes kings and establishes kings. …

Daniel 2:21

They have installed kings,
but not through me.
They have appointed leaders,
but without my approval.
They make their silver and gold
into idols for themselves
for their own destruction.

Hosea 8:4 CSB

10 Where now is your king,
that he may save you in all your cities,
and the rulers you demanded, saying,
“Give me a king and leaders”?
11 I give you a king in my anger
and take away a king in my wrath.

Hosea 13:10-11 CSB

The example of King Nebuchadnezzar’s life

31 While the words were still in the king’s mouth, a voice came from heaven: “King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is declared that the kingdom has departed from you. 32 You will be driven away from people to live with the wild animals, and you will feed on grass like cattle for seven periods of time, until you acknowledge that the Most High is ruler over human kingdoms, and he gives them to anyone he wants.”

Daniel 4:31-32 CSB

36 At that time my sanity returned to me, and my majesty and splendor returned to me for the glory of my kingdom. My advisers and my nobles sought me out, I was reestablished over my kingdom, and even more greatness came to me.

Daniel 4:36 CSB

17 Then Daniel answered the king, “You may keep your gifts and give your rewards to someone else; however, I will read the inscription for the king and make the interpretation known to him. 18 Your Majesty, the Most High God gave sovereignty, greatness, glory, and majesty to your predecessor Nebuchadnezzar. 19 Because of the greatness he gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages were terrified and fearful of him. He killed anyone he wanted and kept alive anyone he wanted; he exalted anyone he wanted and humbled anyone he wanted. 20 But when his heart was exalted and his spirit became arrogant, he was deposed from his royal throne and his glory was taken from him. 21 He was driven away from people, his mind was like an animal’s, he lived with the wild donkeys, he was fed grass like cattle, and his body was drenched with dew from the sky until he acknowledged that the Most High God is ruler over human kingdoms and sets anyone he wants over them.

Daniel 5:17-21 CSB

Limits to Man’s Authority

One of the keys to understanding life is the understanding and importance of authority. Man was given authority over all the creatures of the earth.

And I will require a penalty for your lifeblood;[Lit And your blood belonging to your life I will seek] I will require it from any animal and from any human; if someone murders a fellow human, I will require that person’s life.

Whoever sheds human blood,
by humans his blood will be shed,
for God made humans in his image.

Genesis 9:5-6 CSB

The importance and value of human life is affirmed and one of the limits to man’s authority is given; that is, we have no authority over another’s life as an individual. However, the first role and authority of human government is indicated by how God requirement of a life for a life is carried out.
