In Luke 4:16-21, was given the scroll of Isaiah to read and He started at Isaiah 61:1, but then stopped reading in the middle of the prophecy of His return (Isaiah 61:2 and following). He stops in the middle of the prophecy of His coming, sits down and says “Today as you listen, this Scripture has been fulfilled.” Therefore, the rest of the prophecy was yet to be fulfilled. Furthermore, the rest of the section of prophecy Jesus did not read speaks of the Lord’s anointing to proclaim, not to proclaim “the year of the Lord’s favor”, but “the day of our God’s vengeance”;
61 The Spirit of the Lord God is on me,
Isaiah 61:1-3 CSB
because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to heal[Lit bind up] the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives
and freedom to the prisoners;
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,
and the day of our God’s vengeance;
to comfort all who mourn,
3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion;
to give them a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
festive oil instead of mourning,
and splendid clothes instead of despair.[Lit a dim spirit]
And they will be called righteous trees,
planted by the Lord
to glorify him.
The outline of the end times in Revelation comes immediately to mind, but also the promises of the Beatitudes (especially verse 4):
“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
Matthew 5:3-10 CSB
for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the humble,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
Beyond this, the prophecy continues with a description what the coming day means for His people:
4 They will rebuild the ancient ruins;
they will restore the former devastations;
they will renew the ruined cities,
the devastations of many generations.
5 Strangers will stand and feed your flocks,
and foreigners will be your plowmen and vinedressers.6 But you will be called the Lord’s priests;
Isaiah 61:4-7 CSB
they will speak of you as ministers of our God;
you will eat the wealth of the nations,
and you will boast in their riches.
7 In place of your shame, you will have a double portion;
in place of disgrace, they will rejoice over their share.
So they will possess double in their land,
and eternal joy will be theirs.
Again, the outline of Revelation comes to mind as these verses are read.
